The Department of Sanskrit, University of Delhi is globally the largest centre for Sanskrit studies. It was established in 1922 the year University came into the existence. The Department conducts several academic programmes at Research (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) level, Postgraduate (M.A.) level, Undergraduate (B.A.) level, Certificate and Diploma level. Undergraduate programmes are run in the colleges of the University under the overall supervision of the department.
During the last five years (2008-2013) 120 M.Phil. scholars and 71 Ph.D. scholars have successfully completed their research in different areas such as Vedic Studies, Indian Philosophical Traditions, Poetics, Grammar and Linguistics, Literary Criticism, Epigraphy and Paleography, Dharmashastric Traditions, Epic Literature as well as Astrology and Astronomy etc.
